Adapting a Backgammon Strategy
One of the most important things a new player needs to learn in backgammon
is strategy. This is not simply learned and stored in your memory. You need
to constantly look for new ways to improve your backgammon strategy and
should have several different game plans that you can use at a moment's
notice.
A backgammon game is highly unpredictable. If you're playing a new opponent,
you are most likely to be unfamiliar with his backgammon style and with his
strengths and weaknesses. If you begin a game aggressively, he may trap you
into making mistakes. On the other hand, if you begin a game too cautiously,
you could let him get the upper hand. For this reason, you need to develop a
backgammon strategy that allows you to be flexible based on the strength of
your opponent and your position on the board.
A sound backgammon strategy demands a good knowledge of the best opening
rolls. However, you shouldn't let the opening rolls tie you into a strategy
as a game may change depending on the next roll of the dice. A wise player
will explore several strategies and improve upon his ability to direct the
flow of the backgammon game.
