Backgammon Authors of Note: Bill Robertie
There are many backgammon authors, each with their own individual contributions to the game. Some of them are players themselves, while others are theoreticians or mathematicians who know the game well enough to be able to write about it. Among all backgammon authors, Bill Robertie is one with the highest pedigree.
Bill Robertie is not just among the best of backgammon authors, he is also a world champion backgammon player, besides being a chess enthusiast and also poker player. He has written on poker and chess as well. His backgammon books are considered some of the best written.
Bill Robertie as a backgammon player is no pushover either. Robertie is one of only two players to ever win the Monte Carlo Backgammon World Championship twice, in 1983 and 1987. He has also been the winner at the Pro-Am Bahamas in 1993, besides being the World Cup winner in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1994.
He has been an achiever in chess as well, winning the U.S. Speed Chess tournament. Besides, he has also co-authored a series on tournament play of No Limit Texas Hold’em. This series, which he wrote along with poker world champion in 1995 Dan Harrington, has been a big success, providing great insights into tournament play of the game.
As an author, he has published four backgammon books so far – Backgammon for Serious Players, Backgammon for Winners, 50 Essential Backgammon Problems, and Advanced Backgammon. Robertie may not be as prolific as some of the other backgammon authors, but given his background in backgammon, his books are guaranteed winner that will help any novice slip into high gear once he is through the books and practicing accordingly.
