Backgammon boards are as good as the material they are made of
There are countless different backgammon boards on the market. Some are simple cardboard with the board points printed on the surface whereas others can be elaborate. If you intend to buy a more attractive backgammon set then you need to choose carefully. Not all board materials are alike when it comes to playing the game and sliding the backgammon checkers
Wood is one of the best and most esthetic surfaces for a backgammon set. Many handmade backgammon boards use wood and they can works of art. However, it is important that the board is well constructed. Often, the points will be made of a different material to the board so that they are easier to see. If so you should check that the pointers are fitted flush to the board surface. If the pointers are not flat they backgammon checkers will catch on them as they slide around the board. Not only will this hold up the game but it will eventually ruin the board.
Many fold-away or traveling backgammon boards have a cloth surface across the board. The points are then sown on to the cloth. The cloth should be thick enough that it won't become torn over time. Also the points should be sewn flat so as to not hinder the backgammon checkers. If the backgammon set has space to store the checkers then it should hold them snugly so that they don't move around the board when it is closed. Loose checkers can also damage the playing surface.
Your backgammon set should last you for many years. It needs to be able to withstand the constant wear and tear of the backgammon checkers without becoming chipped or frayed. Choosing well when you buy will save in the long run because one quality set will cost less than buying many inferior backgammon boards.
