Backgammon dice should be tailor made for the game

The roll of the backgammon dice is a critical part of the game. With each roll the fate of the game is decided. It is very important that the dice be unpredictable. This maintains the excitement and fairness of the backgammon game. To do this, players use special dice and roll them from backgammon cups.

Good backgammon dice should be precision made. This means that the dice are carefully manufactured to be perfectly balanced without any bias at all. The pips that show the value on each face of the dice should be printed and not indented. Indentations could alter the fine balance of the dice and affect the backgammon game.

The corners of the backgammon dice are beveled to make them curved. This facilitates a good rolling motion when the dice are thrown from the backgammon cup. Square dice are not used in a backgammon game because they tend to slide and not roll.

Finally the dice should be a good size for the board you are playing on. If the backgammon dice are too large then a badly aimed toss may send the dice crashing into the pieces and ruin the backgammon. The dice should also be hard enough to not chip over time as they are shaken up in the backgammon cup. Dice made especially for a backgammon game can be found in most gaming shops and it is worth spending a little extra on this small but crucial piece of equipment.
