Different Backgammon game pieces

Any time anyone picks up a new Backgammon set one of the first things they notice is the quality of the checkers, or Backgammon game pieces. Primarily the quality of the game pieces are determined by the type of plastic used in their construction. There are several different plastics used in the construction of different kinds of Backgammon game pieces and, due to costs, have changed substantially over the years.

It is still possible to get high quality gaming pieces but, unfortunately, many of the game pieces today are made with very low quality plastic that make the game pieces feel cheap and flimsy. Some of the older production companies used a heavier plastic making the different kinds of Backgammon pieces feel more like clay. The heft of the pieces made them feel solid in a Backgammon players hand and added to the enjoyment of the game. Much like that of gold, a player likes to feel the weight in their hand and this is one measure of a solid Backgammon game piece. Like a solid gaming chip at a casino, solid Backgammon game pieces feel like they are made of clay, while in fact they are a special type of plastic that adds to the mass of the chips.

While it is still possible to get different kinds of Backgammon game pieces that are of higher quality, they are harder to come by and generally cost a bit more. It is best to look in a specialty Backgammon supply store for higher quality plastics. They certainly wont be found in a local outlet store anymore, although they used to be. Another good place to find quality Backgammon game pieces is an antique store.
