The Meaning of Backgammon Pieces

The game piece, or checkers, is the central piece of the game of Backgammon and it serves the players well to know what they are used for. Each player is allotted 15 Backgammon pieces which are usually black and white. There are no rules governing what color the game pieces actually have to be and these can be purchased in many different variations.

The Backgammon game begins with each players Backgammon pieces looking exactly the same on the board. The game then progresses as each player attempts to move their respective pieces from one side of the board to the other. One player will move their pieces clockwise and the other player will move their pieces counterclockwise until either player has eliminated their pieces from the board, thereby winning the game.

Backgammon pieces are moved according to the number amount of the dice thrown. In later stages of the game the player can decide whether or not they wish to move their piece, or double them up to block the other players piece movement. Another tactic that is used to win when blocking another opponents pieces is to accumulate a prime. A prime is six blocks in a row and may afford a winning opportunity if the player can effectively block all other player movement and thereby move their checkers through the prime.

The ultimate objective of the game is to move all of the Backgammon pieces onto their home board and then to bear them off the board to win the game.
