The first backgammon rule to be learnt is how to set up the backgammon board and what path is to be taken by the checkers from their initial position to the final position from where they are moved off from the board. Then you have to learn how the backgammon move is made using the dice and checkers. If in a backgammon move a 5 is thrown on one die and a 4 on the other, one checker can be moved 5 points and another moved 4 points or one checker can be moved 9 points. But the backgammon move cannot be split into 6 and 3 or any other combination of 9.

In the backgammon game the checkers cannot be moved off the board unless they are in the player's home front.
