Backgammon Tournament Etiquette

A backgammon tournament offers players an exciting environment in which to play backgammon. But sometimes your competitive nature can get the better of you. So how do you make sure that you remain considerate and retain a fair and balanced attitude toward your opponent?

A top backgammon player is not easily rattled. If your opponent complains about losing, acknowledge your win but pin it on luck. This will encourage him to challenge you to another game. If situations get out of control, try not to lose your temper. It is easier to walk away and save your energy for improving your backgammon game. While most people in a backgammon tournament know how to conduct themselves professionally, you will occasionally run into a player down on his luck who is looking for someone to blame. Be polite, calm and detached. Losing your cool will only have a negative effect on the way you play backgammon.

An after match handshake in a backgammon tournament is a sign of good sportsmanship. No matter how belligerent your opponent may be, always extend your hand to him after the game. In this way, you're proving you can be a good winner as well as a good loser. Remember that no matter how competitive it gets, backgammon is meant to be fun. Remembering this can help you maintain your self-respect in difficult situations.
