Talking to your Opponent During a Backgammon Tournament
Backgammon is considered a social game played between two people. As such, it is important to remember that backgammon etiquette is an extremely important aspect of any backgammon tournament, especially when it comes to talking to the other player, which could possibly disturb his or her chain of thought and torpedo the game in the backgammon tournament.
It is generally accepted that during a backgammon tournament, talking between opponents should be kept to a minimum. Players obviously need to say things that are pertinent to the game, such as discussing doubles, etc. However, anything that can be deemed disturbing to the other player has no place in a backgammon game. While there are no set backgammon rules about what can and what can't be said specifically, it is generally understood that excess chatter, insults and profanities are not permitted.
Of course, it also depends on the type of backgammon tournament. If we are talking about friendly, regional competitions between players who know each other well, there is always room for a more leisurely atmosphere. However, top tournaments have other rules that should always be considered.
