Blackjack Around the World
Blackjack is undoubtedly one of the most popular card games in history. It is played at homes, in casinos, and on computers around the world. With such a large fan base playing Blackjack in different countries, it’s natural that several versions of the game have developed with their own sets of Blackjack rules.
The game of Blackjack began in France around the year 1700 under the name Vingt-et-un, which means “twenty-one.” Though the game originated in Europe, the name “Blackjack” was created in the United States. In an attempt to popularize the game in American casinos, different bets were offered to players. One of these was a 10:1 payout if a player received an Ace of Spades and a black Jack (Jack of Spades or Clubs). Though this bonus no longer exists, the name “Blackjack” has remained.
Around the world, Blackjack playing styles differ greatly. One of the most popular variations is called “Spanish 21.” There are no 10 cards in the Spanish 21 deck, but when you play Blackjack in this style you receive many more player options. One of the important differences between this and classic Blackjack is the option to “surrender,” or forfeit half of your bet and fold your hand.
Chinese Blackjack is Asia’s most popular version of the game. It follows the standard rules, but doesn’t allow splits.
