Cube proxy during consulting Chouette explained simply.

Consulting Chouette is a version of the game where players can advise and explain moves to other players. Consulting Chouette allows any Chouette player to influence cube decisions, current position and other judgments regarding checker movement.

The term cube proxy in the Chouette backgammon game refers to the situation where a player temporarily handles the cube for another Chouette player. The cube proxy move comes into play when the owner of the cube is temporarily away from the game.

In the Chouette game, the box plays against the rest of the players who are led by a captain. This means that any Chouette player from the team can opt out of game play, and resume play as required. If the player has the cube, then they can nominate the next player to exorcise control over the cube in his absence.

Difficulties arise however when cube proxy is allowed within a consulting Chouette game, if the player handling the cube is also consulting. This can give unfair advantage over the box and also encounter some outlandish decisions being made for the absent player. Therefore it is important that specific rules are agreed within the consulting Chouette game before the game is played.

One way of ensuring fairer play is to allow the box to choose to drop the absent player from the game, thus removing the opportunity for someone else to control his cube. Another is to ban the person who has cube proxy from being allowed to consult at all. A final suggestion is to allow the person handling the cube to beaver their own cube, but only take for the player whose cube they have proxy over.
