Definition of a Tournament Sized Backgammon Board

Contrary to the way it sounds, a 'tournament sized' backgammon board does not necessarily mean that it meets the requirements of a backgammon tournament. Walk into any tournament and you will see backgammon boards in all shapes and sizes. So what is a 'tournament sized' backgammon board then?

This type of backgammon board simply refers to any board that is larger than regular. This kind of backgammon equipment makes it better to play with in tournaments or other social events. Smaller boards may be less easy to see and limit the free roll of the dice on the backgammon board.

There are countries, however, where tournaments do actually specify the size of a backgammon board that can be used in the event. For example, in Denmark, the minimum size of the board can be 44 x 55 cm, while the maximum size needs to be 66 x 88 cm. When purchasing backgammon equipment, it is important to take note of the dimensions.
