Doubling in Backgammon

If you're new to the world of backgammon, you may be unfamiliar with the correct times on when to use the doubling cube. You can use the cube to great effect if you want to intimidate your opponent or up the stakes when the backgammon game is going your way. The following tips will help you improve your knowledge of when to use the doubling cube.

It is strongly recommended that you double if you are out in front and about to win your backgammon game. In fact, if you don't, some opponents may feel insulted! If you are unable to make a gammon, you should double. You can also offer the doubling cube to your opponent if you feel confident he will reject it. This will end the game and give you a backgammon win.

However, a smart backgammon player should also know when to resist using the doubling cube. If you are one roll away from a backgammon win, you should avoid doubling. If you double, it may send the message to your opponent that you think he will make a crucial mistake. Similarly, if there is a slim chance that you may win a gammon, you should roll the dice and continue playing rather than using the doubling cube.
