Important Elements of a Backgammon Board

Purchasing backgammon equipment is not an easy task, especially when we see the wide variety available to us. Buying a backgammon board requires some serious 'looking around' before you decide on one that suits you and your pocket. So what should you look out for in a backgammon board?

A backgammon board should, ideally, be made out of wood, although its playing surface should not be wooden. This is due to the fact that a wood surface can be very noisy, especially when ten or more games are going on at once during a tournament. Look out for a board that is covered in felt, leather or rubber for quiet, discreet play.

Another thing to look out for on a backgammon board is how well the backgammon checkers slide on the play surface. Stitched vinyl points (found on cheaper boards) hamper the slideability of the checkers because the stitching will eventually rise. As a rule of thumb, purchase the best backgammon board that you can afford to spend your money on.
