Learn Backgammon: By the Numbers

Backgammon can be overwhelming to someone not familiar with the game. The way to learn Backgammon is one small piece at a time and then to build upon that knowledge until the game is learned in its entirety. The first item that a player must understand before venturing any further is the jargon used in game play. For example, the primary objective to the game is to bear off the checkers from the board. This means that a player must first bear in the checkers, by bringing them to the inner board, and then bear them off the board, by eliminating them from the board.

After learning some of the terms of the game a player can then begin learning what the pieces of the board are for. One of the most complex pieces of the game, and the one that gives people a great deal of trouble, is the doubling cube. It is essential that a player learn the intricacies of the cube and in no way can all of them be discussed here. Some professionals actually win most of their games by simply mastering this one piece of equipment.

After the terminology, game pieces, and rules are learned the only way a player will be able to progress in skill level is by playing the game. Before the online explosion the only way to play was to find a player slightly better and learn Backgammon from them, and then continue finding better and better players as the player progressed. Nowadays players have the luxury of playing against computer programs that can challenge them just enough allowing players to gain skill and experience much faster than ever before. There are many avenues that allow a player to learn Backgammon. Each player learns the game differently and no option should be discounted when its time to learn Backgammon.
