Making Conversation in Backgammon Tournaments
If you're an online backgammon fan, chances are you probably talk to
yourself in front of your computer. But when it comes to participating in
live backgammon tournaments, you'll need to leave the witty remarks at home.
Many players are unaware of how much they should converse with their
opponent. Obviously, the term "conversation" excludes intimidating
statements and bad language which are a sign of poor sportsmanship.
Obvious comments aside, many backgammon players are not sure if they should
engage their opponent in casual banter. So what are the rules or the general
etiquette that you should adhere to at live backgammon tournaments? The
amount of "chat" really depends on the level of the tournament. If you're
playing the backgammon game of your life against a highly skilled opponent,
you could be accused of trying to distract him if you make too many
comments. You are best advised to keep the conversation for later in between
games.
However, one of the most attractive things about backgammon is its sociable
environment. Lower grade backgammon tournaments are usually more relaxed and
do encourage conversation within limits. Perhaps the best rule is to only
converse during a backgammon game with an opponent that appreciates it.
Refrain from making persistent or frequent comments and if your opponent
indicates that they are unappreciated, stop immediately.
