Poker chips and the European casinos systems
So you want to play in poker games but you don’t know what the colours on the poker chips are worth. Don’t worry, all will be explained to you here. Usually poker chips are red, white, blue and sometimes black. Other colours can be found, but they are lower quality ABS type chips.
Almost as a rule $2.50 chips are used exclusively for blackjack tables, this is because a 'natural' which is a 21 on the first two cards dealt to a player typically pays 3:2 and most wagers are in increments of $5. Some casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey have been known to use pink chips in $7.50-$15 and $10-$20 in poker games. There is a large variation when it comes to low-denomination yellow chips, in Atlantic City and Illinois are not only mustard yellow but are $20, and ranging from $0.50 - $2 in poker rooms across the United States. Occasionally the blue poker chips are used for $10 especially in Atlantic City. In Vegas metal token are used for $1 in stead of chips, but there are some tables in Vegas and California that use blue or white for $1 chips.
It is common that chips are available in $1000 denominations; however this depends on the wagering limits of the individual casino. These are usually large yellow or orange chips. Chips for even higher denominations such as $5,000, $10,000 and even $25,000 vary widely in colour.
In Europe the poker chips run along pretty similar rules, however there are some places that use pink for €2 and blue for €10. What is different about European casinos is that they use plaques rather than chips when it comes to high denominations that reach the €1000 and higher range.
