Learn about Poker History

Poker history is a somewhat controversial subject in that there are several possible places of origin. Modern Poker is probably a conglomeration of several of these older games with new rules mixed in. This is a common practice. Many games have changed over centuries of game play and each society that adopts the game changes it to suit their needs. Players playing the early versions of poker could not possibly foretell the World Poker Tour and so forth.

There are several games that many game historians believe that Poker originated from. One is from a game played in Persia called Nas and may have been taught to early Americans by visiting Persians. This is just one possibility and it is not uncommon for many games to resemble each other without ever having any connection whatsoever.

Another intriguing question about Poker history is where the name of the game itself originated. This also is somewhat controversial and is not completely decided, however, there is a general consensus among Poker historians. The most commonly accepted origin of the game is that it descended from the German name of Pochen. It then passed down into its present form.

Poker history in the United States is easier to track down. The origin of Poker in the United States developed in the 19th century and has evolved to its present state with rapid growth. For even the casual Poker player, knowledge of the game can only improve game play and give the player a sense of the long and storied past that Poker history enjoys.
