The Backgammon Doubling Rule

If you're a new backgammon player, you're probably a little wary about using the backgammon doubling cube. Perhaps you don't know at which stage to use it in a backgammon game and are afraid of losing valuable cash? Or perhaps you lack the skills or confidence to use it effectively? Regardless, understanding the following simple rule about backgammon doubling will help you make the right decisions.

The general rule recommended by most top players is that the backgammon doubling cube should be used on the third or fourth move if there is an advantage. Stronger players may try to delay doubling in the hope that a weaker opponent may retire from the game if caught in a position that is difficult to judge. Similarly, a weaker player may try to avoid doubling for as long as possible in a game because he may lack the ability to judge who is in the stronger position.

In backgammon tournaments, it is a matter of courtesy and respect for your opponent to follow the backgammon doubling rule. Unless you are seriously disadvantaged after just a few moves, there is no reason not to offer the cube to your opponent. Once you've done this you can get on with the game and concentrate on implementing your game strategy.
