The Growing Popularity of Backgammon
In the 1970's the popularity of backgammon was at its peak. Experts say that the reason for this was that the game was considered a fad and thus people who wouldn't normally play a strategy game such as backgammon were drawn to it simply because it was 'in'. New backgammon players discovered the game in their thousands during this decade.
After a slump in the popularity of backgammon in the 1980s and the first part of the 1990's, the game has become enormously successful again because of online backgammon. The internet has introduced the game to millions of people from around the world, thank to the convenience of backgammon sites and their general appeal.
The quality of play has also vastly improved since the 1970s. In fact, it is said that if reasonably good backgammon players from today would compete against top players from that decade, they would be playing in top leagues against the very best in the industry. Today's game is more challenging, faster paced and definitely more 'attack' prone. All this explains why the popularity of backgammon continues to increase from year to year.
