The importance of good backgammon dice

All backgammon players know that good equipment is required for a backgammon game. This does not mean attractive, but useful; equipment that will perform well without any hindrance to the backgammon game. Backgammon players tend to look at the board, considering factors such as its size, weight and board surface. Then the chips are scrutinized for their weight, feel and overall quality. What is often overlooked is the importance of the backgammon dice.

Good quality backgammon dice are imperative as they are central to the backgammon game. They decide the first move, and keep the movement in the game. Without good dice, the backgammon game is in trouble from the start. Firstly, if the dice slide or bounce too hard they are going to bounce into the checkers and knock them off their points. If they are too big, this will have the same effect.

The backgammon dice chosen must be rounded, to help prevent sliding and to also protect the board. Straight edged dice damage the surface which will eventually affect the roll of the dice. Smaller dice that measure half an inch are usually preferred for the backgammon game as they tend to turn more per roll and are therefore considered to be the most random. Likewise they cock less as they are smaller and so do not get caught up on the checkers. Dice with inlaid pips are also important as they ensure fair rolling.

The precision backgammon dice are so important to the game that many backgammon players will refuse to play if they are not used. Make sure you have the appropriate dice for your game to avoid refusal.
