Understanding the Chouette automatic double

As with any version of the backgammon game, the starting move in Chouette needs to determine the order of play. This is done in the usual way with a single backgammon die each. Each player rolls the die and the person who scores highest is referred to as the box. The box plays against all the other players in the Chouette version of the backgammon game. The person that rolls second highest becomes the captain for the team of players and makes the decisions for them.

Sometimes a rule called the Chouette automatic double may be played. This is an optional rule in the backgammon game and is decided before the game commences. If the automatic double is an accepted rule, then the players will also usually agree a limited amount of times that this rule can apply.

The Chouette automatic double comes into play if any of the players roll the same number on the backgammon dice. The double cube will be immediately set at the two level, and the backgammon game stakes for that particular game will be doubled. Then the players will roll again; this automatic second roll is the Chouette automatic double.

If the same numbers are rolled on the backgammon dice for a second time, then this is known as a carryover. The carryover sets the next backgammon game played with the cube at the two level. The Chouette automatic double continues to be played until the agreed limit is reached. This creates an added dimension for the Chouette game, as it increases the stakes and in turn, the competitive edge.
