What is a ‘backgammon chess set’?

The first thing you need to know is that chess is not a type of backgammon and backgammon is not a type of chess. When you see a ‘backgammon chess set’ it is not referring to a set of backgammon-chess, but rather a set that includes a backgammon board and a chess board.

A backgammon chess set will usually appear like a hinged box, oblong in shape with a clasp on one of its long sides. The outside of this box will have the tell-tale squares of a chess set, whilst opening the backgammon chess set will reveal the traditional backgammon board. The backgammon chess set box style allows everything to be neatly tucked away inside the box when it is not in use.

If you are thinking about buying a backgammon chess set, make sure to check that it has the correct pieces for both games. Often times the standard set only comes with backgammon pieces as the backgammon pieces can be used for backgammon, or for checkers on the chess board. You should also check the style of the backgammon pieces that are included, as often the manufacturer includes inferior backgammon pieces, no matter how exquisite the board might seem.

The backgammon board itself is no different to any other type of backgammon board. However, this type is most often made of wood, sometimes with mother of pearl inlay. This and its usual lack of storage spaces for the backgammon pieces, make it unfavorable for tournament games.
