When to quit a backgammon game

Just like any popular board game online backgammon requires etiquette when playing. It’s important to understand the social aspects of playing since backgammon is a community game and you’ll be interacting with a lot of different people both online and offline. One area of interest for many new players is to know when to quit a backgammon game –both for your sake and the sake of your opponent.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s always a good idea to set an upper and a lower limit when playing any game for real money wagers. Of course if you play online backgammon in fun mode for free, there is no need to do this since nothing is at stake. But during a real money backgammon game (or set of games) you should decide before hand on how much you plan to win or lose before you quit.

Playing an open-ended backgammon game is not wise because it’s a sure way to dig yourself into a hole. If you’ve managed to come out ahead then quit while you’re ahead or you’ll soon lose what you’ve won. Likewise, during a losing game of backgammon it’s never wise to play with a strategy of trying to dig yourself out of a losing hole. This leads to frustration and inevitably more losses.

Also, a good indication of when to quit during a backgammon game is based on the doubling cube, which can be used by one player to put pressure on the other player. If you are too far behind in the game it’s better to resign than to accept the doubled stakes and put more at risk.
