"Winning Backgammon": A Review
The book, "Winning Backgammon" by John Leet has been met by mixed reviews in the industry. Some say that this backgammon book is not worth the money spent on it, while others are little kinder and don't slam it outright. Whatever the opinions, it is clear that "Winning Backgammon" is not a runaway hit such as books written by Magriel or Robertie.
The main reason why experts don't suggest that you start off reading "Winning Backgammon" if you are a complete backgammon beginner is that it provides a superficial analysis of the game. It does not teach players how to handle play strategies such as backgames, due to the very short information provided in the book.
That's not to say that you shouldn't read "Winning Backgammon". The general advice is that you should rather begin your backgammon career with another, more comprehensive book and then try Leet's text. Experts say that once you are at a stage where you can compare Leet to - for example - Robertie's writing, you will be able to pinpoint the reasons why the former is generally considered inferior.
