Magriels Contribution to Writing about Backgammon

Magriel has made a significant contribution to the game of backgammon by writing about backgammon in the book by the same name. Magriels effort at writing about backgammon was one of the classical pieces of analysis of a game where skill is paramount, with luck too contributing to an extent to the outcome.

Titled Backgammon, the book, besides adopting an analytical approach to the game, made its mark as the number one piece of literature when it came to backgammon in its time. Writing about backgammon is not an easy feat, especially if you do not know too much about the game. The book not only listed out strategies and offered analyses of the various moves of the game over a spread of 400-odd pages, it also had illustrations to back up the text and make it easier for the reader to understand what he was trying to talk about.

There have been many other writers who have taken to writing about backgammon, some preceding Magriel and some after his time. However, none of them have been able to have the same impact or success that Magriel has had. The popularity of the book among backgammon enthusiasts new and old is evident from the fact that it is out of print, and the only mail-order lists that had it priced it higher ($80) than the original price at the time of publication ($24.95).

Magriels contribution to writing about backgammon is very important, as he more or less set the standard for the way a good backgammon book should be written. Since then, there have been many books written on backgammon. While some have failed to catch the eye and others have been successful, nothing can take away from Magriels contribution to backgammon literature.
